Red and Green Tiger Lotus

Post by guppyguy on Wed Apr 16, 2014 3:29 pm

These are both equally beautiful lily species. They are bulb plants. The two most important factors in successfully growing a Red or Green Tiger Lotus in an aquarium is plenty of light and a healthy substrate. Keep in temps for the tiger Lotus between 70-80° Fahrenheit (21-27° Celsius), with a pH of 6.5-7.5. Once the plant takes root, it will produce off-shoots extending to the water's surface. Keeping the off-shoots trimmed will encourage bottom growth of the plant. A healthy tiger lotus can reach up to 10-15 inches (25–38 cm) in height. Can make a great center piece plant in a aquarium or accent plant. If you can find them they make a great edition to the planted tank.

Or, you let the plant go crazy .... this is a 60x18x26 120 gallon tank, so you can get an idea of the size of the leaves.... Also, just to give you an idea of what this tank was like, there are a few interesting fish in the photo and there is actually 324 watts of T5 HO lighting above the tank....

Actually, the red tiger lotus is the only 'red' plant that has done well for me in low light. Mine grows under only 1.3 WpG.

Here you can see it in the tank I am talking about. I trim it if the leaves try to 'shoot' up.

Hey guys plants are looking great and I happy to see wonderful responses. They can grow huge if there off shoots are not trimmed to keep them compact for sure. The ones you see in my pictures I have not had very long. I like to start some plants in pots till they get a certain size and then move them to the planted tank of my choice.  Cool

Here is another shot of my 120. With the leaves from the lotus floating on top, it doesn't look like there is 324 watts of HO light shining into the tank. The photo gets cropped on the right side but you can see it looks almost in shade. There is also a fair bit of tannins in the water from the Mopani wood, leaves and peat that is under the fluorite. When I moved this tank there were roots for the lotus that ran the whole length of the tank and were more than 1/2 inch think.
