I have no idea, perhaps they have some kind of coating on them?

I have used them from everywhere.

The ones from Wal-Mart are probably the cheapest I have found, but slightly smaller then some of the others. I just rinse them well before I use them.

I've used pot scrubbers for at least a decade in my Aqua clears. I also use Buffalo Snow from Wal-Mart or Canadian Tire its great , my sandwich is Aqua clear sponge Buffalo Snow pot scrubber then ceramic rings. the only draw back is you can only get Buffalo snow during the Christmas season but a bag 6$( cheaper in after Christmas )last all year.
