A fishy Sunday in Saigon

Post by Biulu on Sun Nov 06, 2016 6:00 am

Most of you know that I travel for work and most of you also know that I am very much into labyrinth fish. Now my travel brings me regularly to Asia and this also happens to be the region where my labyrinth fish come from AND where they are popular with other hobbyists.

Last year around this time I fell for Facebook and I have joined several labyrinth fish related pages. This resulted today in visiting several hobbyists in Saigon or Ho Chi Minh Cith as it is called officially. I had a great time and I will be bringing back the following:
Macropodus spechti
Macropodus opercularis
Trichopsis vittatus (almost 2x as big as the commercial fish!)
Betta smaragdina
Betta imbellis
Betta mahachai
Betta siamorientalis

Here come some pictures of set-ups and fish. We are lucky in Canada to have all the equipment we need....
And guess what they feed here?! Juvenile boraras (mosquito fish)! A bag full costs the equivalent of 10 cents....

Very very interesting.

But Bororas as feeders??? Such wonderful, hard to get fish here!

I think a tall guy like me would have some trouble with those bottom tanks.

I managed to bring back a bag of borara feeder fish. At least 30 survived the trip.

@Charlie1 if you are coming to the auction in Mtl this Sunday, I'll gladly bring them for you. Or alternatively I can give them to another OVAS member if you can't make it. Just let me know....

You're welcome! I am glad I could up your numbers after several of the brigittae died back in springtime.

They will need some fattening up but they seem healthy.
