As part of the wet lab I attended this past weekend, we got to tour Kloubec Koi Farm. This is one of the largest Koi farms in North America with 84 acres of ponds. It was a pretty amazing experience to tour this facility and see how they do things. We were told they produce over 20 million koi each year.

These are their Male brood stock.

These are the Female brood stock

One of their spawning tanks, these koi are 3 days old at this point (I think) they were scheduled to go out into a mud pond for the summer a couple days after we were there.

That will be great to see and would be a great place to visit. Steve for you and a few of us others a place like that would be great to work at. How many Fry were in that small pond do you estimate?

They said but I can't remember, It was a 500G tank with the spawn of a couple of fish. So I'm going to estimate 10-20,000.

During May and June they strip females every 3-4 days. The fry stay in the hatchery for about 7 days, then they go out to the ponds and the process is repeated. They give them hormone injections the day before they are stripped and a sedative the day off. It seems kind of rough to me, but they say it's much safer for the fish then natural spawning.
