Hazards of shipping

Post by Diogenoir on Tue Oct 15, 2013 11:13 pm

Two package of plants arrived today
From Pointe-Claire, QC H9R 1J7 - mailed 13-10-01 - arrived save and sound
From Pointe-Claire, QC H9R 4L4 - mailed 13-8-05 - arrived as brown smelly soap -
this package has been missing in action for 2 months and arrived in a plastic bag labeled
"We apologize Dear Customer - the enclosed item of mail was either received in this condition or damaged during its processing. We sincerely regret this unfortunate incident and any inconvenience caused. We are always concerned when mail entrusted to our care is damaged, and we have made considerable improvements to reduce incidents in our operations. Please be assured that we are continuing to make every effort to improve our service"
I think this second package it either got stuck in a machine or fell behind something.

I've sent out a lot of packages with fish over the past three years - probably a hundred or so. Your successful plant mailing was my first with plants, but hey. So far, two have arrived badly damaged, and one wiped out by a postal mishap. 95% of the fish have been fine.
The odds are good that all will go well...
I have received maybe twenty envelopes with fish eggs, and three or four boxes in the same time. One bag of eggs was really late (ten days) but it was from Europe so the screw up had many potential stages.
Overall, I am very impressed with Canada Post's package delivery system. The stuff I have received has taken the same time as the courriers, but at significantly less cost. If we ever go to a completely privatized shipping system, hobbyist exchanges are doomed. We couldn't afford it unless we were incorporated. But for now, my experience says you just had rotten luck.

Really rotten luck...

Diogenoir

I have been shipping via Xpresspost which is one day or two day max. I use a Dollarama plastic container large enough to protect the fish bag (medium size) then with a cardboard box on the outside. I have had examples where the post office damaged the outside cardboard shipper and that is why I use the plastic inner box to absorb any impact and serve as a rigid support against any heavy load. I use tape to seal completely. Since I use Xpresspost it can be tracked and traced.

The bottom line is that Xpresspost cost $15-$20 but I feel it is worth the expense for high value fish.

Canada Post, despite what people say about them, has given me excellent service. Xpress or Priority Post has worked worked well, with a only one out-right disaster and a few shipments that arrived one day late. They don't balk at issuing refunds either.
