MTS alive or dead?? Empty MTS alive or dead??

Post by Earhtmother Thu Apr 28, 2016 8:01 pm

So I picked up a used 65g tank that had been used for Africans and still an argonite substrate. It had been almost completely drained and got pretty cold so I need to know if the hundreds of MTS shells need to be picked out or if there might still be life in them. Is there a way to tell?

Hmmm...an interesting question as I have shut down tanks, drained them, dried out substrate, and let them sit for months, only to restart them and discover live snails (MTS and ramshorns). If anything, they seem to be a strong species with a definite will to live! If your substrate has been sitting at temps cold enough though, I would guess they would not survive. But, again - I cannot say that with certainty! I personally like having a 'few' MTS (not so much ramshorns though) as they do a great job of aerating our sand substrate. We have a small number of MTS in our 220, 55, and 36 and they are going strong Very Happy too many not so good though Razz
