Would something like the following be better for aquarium bottoms than sand or gravel? It'd be easier to clean, I think?

I use those for breeding super cannibalistic livebearers (Brachyrhaphis, Gambusia etc) as they are prickly and somewhat painful for adult fish to go into them to chase fry - they learn to let the fry that make it to the plastic lawn be. I float it.

A painful layer on the bottom? I wouldn't go there.

I have 2 pieces 4"X4" with a piece of tile in the middle silicone together and is good for Fry on the bottom but is a real garbage collector and can be hard to clean. I would imagine a carpet of this on the bottom would be even worse to get clean and keep clean not to mention the problems Gary mentioned. Then when you go to clean the Fry would be sucked up with your water vacuum or python ( even harder to recover Fry).
Just my observations and thoughts and hope this helps.

Well, neither of my 2 large tanks have anything that small. One tank has 3 ID sharks while the other has a koi & a comet goldfish. So no worries about any fries.

I was thinking that when it comes to cleaning, I would just pull them out, rinse them off & use the python to suck up the rest that is on the bottom.

All you can do is try it and see if it works for you. I just find that the sludge goes up into the water when I move mine and must wait for it to settle before suctioning it up and I can never seem to get it all.

I am planning on using this stuff for breeding egg scatterers. Just cut them to size to cover the bottom of a 5 gallon.
