New fertilizers now online

Post by The PlantGuy on Thu Jul 23, 2015 8:37 am

There is nothing magical about the fertilizer sold at pet stores.  Potassium is Potassium, Nitrogen is Nitrogen and Phosphates are Phosphates.  Companies don't have a patent on these natural elements.  So why are they so expensive? 90% of liquid fertilizer is water, the rest is plastic and a tiny bit is fertilizer.   If there's nothing magical about fertilizer why not save some money and do it yourself?  We provide all you need to do that.

There are many different fertilization strategies that planted tank folks employ.  Some are based on dosing the aquarium directly with dry fertilizers (EI Index)  and some involve mixing the dry fertilizer in a bottle and dosing from there (Perpetual preservation system, PPS).  We offer both solutions and try to make things as easy as possible for you.

The cost savings of buying dry fertilizers in bulk should be pretty obvious but even the liquid options we offer provide huge savings over other brands.  As an example for a 10 gallon tank:

PlantGuy Nitrogen (Potassium Nitrate as the source)
2ml per dose would raise the NO3 (nitrate level) to 10.6 ppm (desired level is 10-20ppm) and raise the K (potassium level) to 6.7ppm (desired level 10-20ppm).  Each pump doses 0.5ml.  So if you need less, you can control the doses.

This works out to 125 doses per bottle x3 for a 10 gallon tank.

Other brands of nitrogen are a lot more watered down and would require 26.5 ml per dose to reach the same NO3 level.   Although Potassium nitrate is listed as their source for NO3, they do not mention how much K (potassium)  is being added to the tank likely because it’s insignificant.  So this works out to 9.5 doses per bottle

This is a wonderful line up. And great that you can get what you need individually with nice pump bottles to boot.
