Film on top of water??? Empty Film on top of water???

Post by JanesAddiction Sun Jul 05, 2015 11:14 am

I have noticed that some of my 10 tanks seems to have "film" across the top of it... almost reminds me of gas sitting on water or maybe it is oil...whatever, I am sure you know what I mean. lol I haven't done water tests this week but will be doing them today or tomorrow. It is not in all of the tanks but about half. I don't add anything to my tanks other than tap water conditioner. Anyone else ever get this??

You just need some surface movement ...its a protein build up I get it in my fry tanks I just add an air stone

Sometimes, it means you are overfeeding. Some types of flake add to it. It's always there, but with surface movement, you can break it up so you don't see it.

It is a water test for me - I don't own any kits, but that's an indicator that says "water change garbage is building up in there". Like fish lady, I see it more in fry tanks because it's hard not to overfeed growing fish.

I do notice that it is in the tanks that have internal filters or water level is high/filter is sitting lower. I will have to move my filters/water levels some.

I gotta do some wc but today is not gonna be the day. Drove an unknown object that was in the ground through my flip flop and into my foot. Was chasing my youngest for ripping my corn out of my garden Sad

Nope but I doused it in peroxide and ointment. Keeping it good and clean. Good size hole there now.

We had the same film on top of our tetra tank. Instead of adding just an air tube, we added a sponge filter (still getting more air, but also serving a filtration purpose!). So far so good - we have no film on top of the waterline. Smile

I pulled the internal filter that is in the 20g guppy breeder up to the top so it no longer has film on it Smile
